The Coimbatore International Airport and the Chennai International Airport are the two busiest airports in Tamil Nadu in terms of passenger traffic. In April 2012, the facility achieved its certification under the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, granted international airport status on October 4, 2012. When the construction of a new international and domestic passenger terminal was completed in 2009, the previous passenger terminal was turned into an international freight complex, which now comprises the control tower and the technical building, among other structures.
